Garowe Airport guide

Garowe Airport serves the capital of Puntland, in northern Somalia. It sits on the northeast side of the city, about 12 km from the centre. The airport is also known as Garowe International Airport and was renamed after General Mohamed Abshir Muse, the first chief of the Somali police, who came from Garowe.

The airport was officially opened in 2010 under Puntland's Ministry for Civil Aviation and Airports. The first construction phase took seven years and was delivered as a public-private partnership, with the Garowe-based Mubarak construction company contributing significantly. A 2013 grant agreement with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development provided 10 million US dollars, 6 million of it for the airport.

The single asphalt runway, 06/24, is 2,000 m long. The project also included a 25 m control tower and a firefighting station. The two-floor passenger terminal was designed for 120 passengers. Flights link Garowe with other Somali cities such as Mogadishu, Bosaso and Galkayo, and with Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
