Lungi International Airport Guide
Last updated 2026-05-24 UTC
Freetown International Airport is located in the coastal town of Lungi, on the northern side of the Sierra Leone River estuary, directly opposite the capital Freetown. The separation from the city is a defining characteristic — passengers must cross by ferry (45 minutes) or speed boat, or take a 180 km overland route. The airport is the only international gateway in Sierra Leone.
The current terminal opened on 4 March 2023, replacing an aging facility that had served since 1964. Built and now operated by Summa Airport (SL) Ltd under a 25-year build-operate-transfer agreement, the 14,000 square metre terminal handles up to 1 million passengers annually and can accommodate 8 wide-body aircraft simultaneously. In 2025, the airport processed 268,929 passengers.
The airport has a single 3,200-metre runway and serves nine scheduled airlines. Brussels Airlines operates the longest route, flying non-stop to Brussels. ASKY Airlines runs the highest frequency of departures, with around 14 take-offs per week to West African destinations.
