Khartoum International Airport Guide

Khartoum International Airport sits just 5 km northeast of Khartoum city centre, making it one of the most centrally located major airports in Africa. The airport originated as a Royal Air Force airfield during World War II and transitioned to civilian use following Sudanese independence in 1956. It served as Sudan's primary international gateway for decades and was the hub for the national carrier Sudan Airways.

Before the outbreak of civil conflict in April 2023, the airport handled approximately 3.5 million passengers annually and connected Khartoum to destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Airlines including EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Saudia, Emirates, and Badr Airlines operated scheduled services. Fighting forced closure in April 2023, causing extensive damage to the terminal and aircraft on the apron.

The airport reopened for domestic flights in October 2025 after government forces recaptured the site and undertook repairs. Sudan Airways resumed the first scheduled commercial service to Khartoum in February 2026. A single runway of 2,980 metres serves the airport, and a replacement facility — the New Khartoum International Airport — is under development in Omdurman, 40 km south of the city centre.
