Kigali International Airport sits in the Kanombe sector at the eastern edge of the capital, about 11 km by road from the city centre. Elevation of 1,491 metres makes it one of the highest international airports in Africa. The airport has one 3,500-metre runway and operates around the clock, handling both regional and intercontinental traffic.

RwandAir, the national flag carrier, dominates operations and accounts for the majority of weekly departures. European carriers including Brussels Airlines and KLM offer direct connections to Amsterdam and Brussels, while Qatar Airways links the capital to the Gulf. The airport serves as a transit point for passengers travelling between East Africa and Europe.

A replacement facility — Kigali Bugesera International Airport — is under construction in Bugesera District, approximately 40 km southeast of the capital, and is expected to significantly expand Rwanda's air capacity once operational.
