Hamad International Airport opened in stages during 2014, replacing the smaller Doha International Airport as Qatar's principal gateway. Built largely on land reclaimed from the Persian Gulf coast east of central Doha, it serves as the home hub of Qatar Airways, the national carrier that also owns the company managing the site.

The airport's two runways rank among the longest used for scheduled commercial service, able to handle the heaviest long-haul aircraft including the Airbus A380. A central atrium known as The Orchard houses a tropical garden beneath a glass canopy, part of a retail and dining precinct that spans tens of thousands of square metres. An adjoining transit hotel and spa let travellers rest between long-haul connections without clearing immigration.

Qatar's small territory means Hamad handles almost exclusively international traffic, with no scheduled domestic routes within the country. Passenger volumes climbed past pre-pandemic levels by the mid-2020s, driven largely by travellers connecting between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas through Doha.
