Girua Airport guide

Girua Airport (IATA: PNP, ICAO: AYGR) serves Popondetta, the main town of Oro Province on the north coast of Papua New Guinea's mainland. The airport is near Dobodura. It is operated by the National Airports Corporation, the state airport company.

The site began as a wartime fighter strip. The U.S. Army built it in late 1942 and early 1943 as part of the Dobodura Airfield Complex, which had 15 landing grounds. Known then as Kenney Airfield or Dobodura No. 7, it was the only strip in the complex not abandoned after the war, and it is now called Girua Airport.

The single asphalt runway, 03/21, is 1,672 m long, and the field lies 95 m above sea level. A project funded mainly by the Asian Development Bank and carried out by the National Airports Corporation strengthened the runway and built a new terminal building, which Prime Minister Peter O'Neill officially opened in March 2018. Air Niugini flies to Port Moresby, and PNG Air flies to Port Moresby and Tufi. Mount Lamington, an active volcano, rises to the south of the airfield.
