Losuia Airport guide

Losuia Airport serves the town of Losuia on Kiriwina Island, the largest of the Trobriand Islands in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. It is the only airport on the island, so it carries nearly all air traffic to and from the group. Its ICAO code is AYKA, and the field sits about 6 metres above sea level.

The strip began as a wartime airfield. United States Army engineers started work in July 1943, and the first aircraft, a C-47, landed on 2 August 1943. Navy Seabees then extended the field, with the work complete by late October 1943. The original coral-surfaced runway measured 6,000 by 150 feet. Pacific Wrecks lists the airfield as still operational, used by light aircraft, missionary flights and regional carriers such as Airlines PNG.

Scheduled passenger flights link Kiriwina with the mainland through Alotau. PNG Air resumed service in June 2018 with Dash 8-100 turboprops, about twice a week, after a year-long gap that followed damage to the airport during unrest in 2017. No public figures for passengers or aircraft movements were found.
