Chimbu Airport guide

Chimbu Airport, also listed as Kundiawa Airport, serves Kundiawa, the capital of Simbu (Chimbu) Province in the Papua New Guinea highlands. The ICAO code is AYCH. The airfield sits at an elevation of 1,516 metres (4,974 feet) and has one asphalt runway, designated 03/21, about 1,015 metres long. Before the Pacific War it was known as Simbu Airfield.

The airport lies on the edge of Kundiawa town, so the trip from the terminal area into the centre is short. The Highlands Highway passes through the Waghi valley nearby, and the highlands towns of Goroka and Mount Hagen are the closest other airports with regular air service.

Scheduled flights here have been limited. Air Niugini listed Port Moresby services in earlier years and resumed twice-weekly flights in 2013, but local reporting in 2018 described Kundiawa Airport as closed for several years. The national government has proposed a replacement airport at Kup in Kerowagi district. Check the current status with the National Airports Corporation or an airline before planning a trip that depends on a flight into Chimbu.
