Kirkenes Airport, Høybuktmoen guide

Kirkenes Airport sits at Høybuktmoen in Sør-Varanger Municipality, in the far northeast of Norway's Finnmark county. The Russian border is close by. It is the main air link for the town of Kirkenes and the surrounding border region.

The Luftwaffe built the airfield during World War II, and it saw heavy use against Arctic convoys. Civilian flights stopped in 1948. Work on the modern airport began in 1961. The 2,115 m runway, 05/23, was extended after the smaller of the two original runways closed in 1996. Hills east of the airfield obstruct the approach, so the eastern extensions have never received an operating permit.

A new terminal opened on 4 May 2006 and can handle six category C aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Widerøe links Kirkenes with smaller Finnmark communities, including Vadsø, Vardø, Båtsfjord and Hammerfest. SAS and Norwegian fly to Oslo, and Finnair serves Helsinki. Hamburg International runs seasonal charters from Germany for Hurtigruten passengers.
