Tromsø Airport sits on the western shore of Tromsøya island, 5 kilometres from the city centre. Opened in September 1964, it replaced an earlier water aerodrome at Skattøra. Operated by the state-owned Avinor, it is the busiest airport in northern Norway and serves as the primary gateway to the Arctic region of the country.

The airport recorded around 2.7 million passengers in 2024, driven largely by growth in international tourism. Northern lights tourism in winter and midnight sun visitors in summer have fuelled a surge in direct European charter and scheduled services. A new international extension opened in 2024 to accommodate the increased traffic, which saw international flights nearly triple compared to 2022 levels.

SAS, Norwegian, and Widerøe dominate domestic services. Widerøe connects Tromsø to dozens of smaller communities across northern Norway using Dash 8 turboprops. International carriers including British Airways, Finnair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air operate seasonal and year-round European routes.
