Bakalalan Airport guide

Ba'kelalan Airport (ICAO: WBGQ) serves Ba'kelalan, a group of nine Lun Bawang villages in the Maligan Highlands of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The airstrip sits at about 880 m elevation, a few kilometres from the Indonesian Kalimantan border.

The only road out is a former logging track of roughly 125 km to Lawas. It suits four-wheel-drive vehicles only and takes at least six hours, longer in the rainy season. For most residents and visitors the short flight is the practical way in and out.

A single bitumen runway, 05/23, is 549 m long. That limits the field to short take-off and landing aircraft such as the 19-seat DHC-6 Twin Otter. AirBorneo flies scheduled rural air services from here. In 2015 the airport handled 3,435 passengers and 328 aircraft movements. A Twin Otter overshot the runway on landing in September 2008; all 14 people on board were unhurt.
