Kuala Lumpur International Airport guide

Kuala Lumpur International Airport opened in June 1998, replacing the older Subang Airport as Malaysia's principal gateway. It sits in the Sepang district of Selangor, south of the capital, on a site large enough to keep its terminals, runways and cargo facilities well separated. Khazanah Nasional, the national sovereign wealth fund, owns the airport through Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, which also operates most of the country's other commercial airports.

Three parallel runways, each over 3,800 metres long, let the airport handle the heaviest long-haul aircraft alongside a high volume of short-haul turnarounds. Malaysia Airlines anchors the airport as its home hub, while AirAsia operates the largest single share of flights of any carrier, reflecting Kuala Lumpur's role as a budget-travel hub for Southeast Asia. A high-speed rail link connects the terminals directly to KL Sentral station in the city centre.

Passenger numbers passed 63 million in 2025, restoring the airport to the growth path it was on before the pandemic interrupted regional air travel. Cargo operations run alongside passenger traffic, supported by Malaysia's position on major trans-Asian shipping and manufacturing routes.
