Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport guide

Benito Juárez International Airport sits in the Peñón de los Baños neighborhood of Venustiano Carranza borough, on the eastern edge of Mexico City. It opened for commercial operations on May 15, 1931, and takes its name from 19th-century president Benito Juárez. The Mexican Navy owns the site; Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México operates it day to day.

The airport remains Mexico's busiest, though São Paulo–Guarulhos and Bogotá's El Dorado both carried more passengers than it did in 2025. It sits at 2,230 meters above sea level, an altitude that reduces the maximum takeoff weight some aircraft can carry on longer routes. Aeroméxico runs its main SkyTeam hub here, while Volaris and Viva both base large domestic operations at the field.

Controllers work under a cap of 46 aircraft movements per hour to manage congestion on the airfield, a limit regulators raised in stages after cutting it to 43 in 2023. Dense urban development around the perimeter leaves little room to expand, which led the government to open Felipe Ángeles International Airport north of the city in 2022 to take on some of the region's traffic.
