Malta International Airport guide

Malta International Airport sits in the town of Luqa, on the site of the former RAF Luqa airbase that served as Malta's main wartime airfield. It is the only airport in the Maltese Islands, so every scheduled flight to and from the archipelago passes through it. Malta International Airport plc has run the site since a 2002 privatisation, when the government sold 40% of its equity to the Malta Mediterranean Link Consortium and floated a further 40% on the Malta Stock Exchange, keeping a 20% stake.

KM Malta Airlines, which took over the former national carrier Air Malta's routes in March 2024, uses the airport as its hub, alongside the regional operator Medavia. Ryanair bases aircraft here through its Maltese subsidiary Malta Air, and Lufthansa Technik runs maintenance operations on site, alongside a heavy-maintenance facility easyJet bought from SR Technics in 2024. Passenger traffic passed 10 million for the first time in 2025, reaching 10,061,969 — a 12.3% rise on the year before — while aircraft movements climbed 11.4% to 65,470. Around 34 airlines linked the airport to more than 100 routes across 37 countries that year.

The airport also houses Malta's air traffic Area Control Centre and stages the annual Malta International Airshow. Two crossing asphalt runways handle everything from short regional hops to long-haul widebody services, including Emirates' Dubai flight and Delta's seasonal nonstop to New York.
