Macau International Airport guide

Macau International Airport sits on reclaimed land off the eastern shore of Taipa island, with its single runway built out across the water on a causeway. Commercial service began on 9 November 1995, during the final years of Portuguese administration, making it the last major airport built before the 1999 handover to China. CAM, a company in which the Macau SAR government holds a 67.87% stake, has run the airport since 1989 under a concession that extends to 2039.

Air Macau, the territory's only home-based carrier, is headquartered here, and budget airlines such as AirAsia and Scoot route substantial regional traffic through the field. Because Macau keeps its own immigration and customs border with mainland China, every flight counts as international, and the airport has long worked as a transfer point for travellers moving between the mainland and Taiwan, alongside its role feeding Macau's casino and hospitality trade.

Traffic collapsed during the pandemic and has since rebuilt: 7.6 million passengers passed through in 2024, up 48% on 2023 but still about a fifth below the 9.6 million recorded in 2019. Air cargo reached 108,000 tonnes in 2024, up nearly 70% year on year. A south extension to the passenger terminal, under construction since 2020, is designed to lift annual capacity from 7.8 million to 10 million passengers.
