Kyaukpyu Airport guide

Kyaukpyu Airport (ICAO VYKP) is a small regional airfield on Ramree Island's northern coast in Rakhine State, western Myanmar. It sits beside the town it serves and close to the site of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone and deep-sea port, whose construction is expected to lift air demand over time.

The airfield dates to the Second World War, when it was built with a 2,500-foot runway of steel Marston matting. The runway was sealed with tar in 1955. It has one runway, aligned 18/36, with a bitumen surface. Sources disagree on its usable length. Myanmar parliamentary papers give 4,620 feet (about 1,408 metres), and a proposal sought funds to extend it to 7,500 feet.

Traffic is light. Myanmar National Airlines has been listed on flights to Yangon, Sittwe and Thandwe, and Air KBZ has been reported on the route as well. Schedules change often and the region is affected by conflict, so confirm any flight with the airline before travelling. The terminal is basic, and a planned upgrade would let it handle passengers from two ATR 72 aircraft at once.
