Myitkyina Airport guide

Myitkyina Airport (ICAO: VYMK) serves Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar. It lies about 4 km west of the town centre, at an elevation of roughly 175 metres, and is the main air link between Kachin State and the rest of the country.

The airfield pre-dates the Second World War. The Imperial Japanese Army captured it on 8 May 1942 and flew fighters from it against Allied aircraft crossing the Hump route between India and China. Merrill's Marauders took it on 17 May 1944, and Allied cargo groups then used it for resupply until American forces left in December 1945.

The airport has one asphalt runway, 04/22, which is 1,859 metres long. That suits turboprops and narrow-body jets on domestic routes. Scheduled services run to Mandalay, Putao and Yangon, and listings name several domestic carriers, including Myanmar National Airlines and Air Thanlwin. Schedules change often and sources disagree on which airlines currently fly, so check with the airline before travelling. Passenger totals are not published.
