Mandalay International Airport guide
Updated 2026-09-28Mandalay International Airport opened on 17 September 2000 in Tada-U Township, replacing the older Chanmyathazi Airport as the city's main gateway. The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar owns the airport; MC-JALUX Airport Services (MJAS) has run it since 2015 under a 30-year concession signed in November 2014. MJAS is a joint venture in which Mitsubishi Corporation and JALUX Inc. each hold 45.5 percent, and the remaining 9 percent is held by SPA Project Management, an affiliate of Serge Pun's privately held Yoma Development Group. The single runway measures 4,267 metres (14,000 feet), among the longest in Southeast Asia, and the terminal's six boarding bridges include three built for the Boeing 747-8i. One passenger terminal handles both international and domestic flights, with check-in and boarding organised across two floors. Mann Yadanarpon Airlines is based at Mandalay, and the airport works as a secondary hub for several other Myanmar carriers, linking central Myanmar to points across the country and to destinations in southern China and Thailand. Passenger traffic reached about 1.8 million in 2019, its highest year on record, before the COVID-19 pandemic cut volumes sharply. A magnitude-7.7 earthquake centred near Sagaing and Mandalay on 28 March 2025 damaged the runway and destroyed radar and radio equipment, closing the airport until it reopened on 4 April 2025.
