Magway Airport guide

Magway Airport (ICAO: VYMW) serves Magway, the capital of Magway Region in central Myanmar. The airport sits at an elevation of 91 metres and lies about 6 kilometres from the city.

The airfield has one concrete runway, designated 01/19, which is 2,600 metres long. The apron measures 122 metres by 122 metres. Facilities include air traffic control, edge runway lighting, an NDB navigation aid, category 2 fire-fighting cover and weather information. The airport has no refuelling capacity and no ground handling services.

The site was an Allied air base during the Second World War, when it was known as Magwe. It is shared with the Myanmar Air Force, which bases fighter aircraft here, and the field is used for military training. Commercial flights stopped for a number of years. The Ministry of Transport and Communications resumed scheduled service in May 2019 at the request of the Magway Regional Government, with Myanmar National Airlines flying to Yangon.

The airport is small and sees few passenger flights. Travellers should check current timetables with the airline before planning a trip. Magway itself is reachable by road, and Yangon, Naypyidaw and Bagan are the larger destinations in the surrounding region.
