Riga International Airport Guide
Riga International Airport is located in Mārupe Municipality, about 10 kilometres southwest of Riga's city centre. It opened in 1973 as a replacement for the outdated Spilve Airport and has since grown into the busiest airport in the Baltic states. The airport served 7.1 million passengers in 2025 across 63,200 aircraft movements.
The airport operates a single passenger terminal with two departure piers, handling both Schengen and non-Schengen traffic. airBaltic, which maintains its headquarters at the airport, accounts for around 57% of all passengers. Ryanair, which established a base in Riga in 2021, holds approximately 23% market share. Together they serve over 100 destinations across Europe and beyond.
A major expansion is planned to increase annual capacity to 12 million passengers, with a new terminal aligned with the Rail Baltica project and scheduled to open around 2030. The airport is owned and operated by SJSC Riga International Airport, a state-owned company under Latvia's Ministry of Transport.
