Zaysan Airport guide

Zaysan Airport is a small domestic airfield in the Zaysan district of East Kazakhstan Region, close to the border country between Kazakhstan, China and Russia. Its IATA code is SZI and its ICAO code is UASZ. The field sits at an elevation of about 572 metres above sea level, on the plain south of the Altai foothills and near Lake Zaysan.

The airport has a single concrete runway, 09/27, which is 1,505 metres long. That length suits turboprops and light regional aircraft, and the airfield also accepts helicopters. It is a domestic facility with no customs or immigration service, and it does not run around the clock.

The airport dates from the Soviet period, when it linked remote parts of East Kazakhstan with the regional centre at Oskemen. Its ageing infrastructure and short runway have limited the aircraft it can take. Regional plans call for a rebuilt airport complex near Zaysan with a longer runway, a new passenger terminal and modern navigation equipment, intended to improve transport access to border areas and support tourism.

Scheduled passenger service from Zaysan is limited. Travellers often reach the region through Oskemen, the nearest airport with regular flights to Astana and Almaty, and complete the journey to Zaysan by road.
