Jomo Kenyatta International Airport guide

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport sits in the Embakasi area, about 18 kilometres southeast of Nairobi's city centre, at an elevation of 1,624 metres above sea level. It opened on 9 March 1958 as Embakasi Airport and was renamed in honour of Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta. The Kenya Airports Authority owns and operates it. In 2024 the airport handled about 9.07 million passengers, making it Africa's sixth busiest airport by passenger traffic.

Kenya Airways uses the airport as its hub, linking Nairobi with destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia and North America, and the airport serves as a transit point for East and Central Africa. A single asphalt runway, 06/24, is 4,117 metres long and 60 metres wide and handles all traffic.

Terminal 1 is a semi-circular complex divided into five units. Unit 1A handles international arrivals and departures for Kenya Airways and SkyTeam carriers, 1B and 1C handle international departures, 1D handles domestic flights and 1E is a temporary international arrivals unit. Terminal 2 opened in April 2015 for low-cost and regional carriers. The Kenya Airports Authority has published a master plan that includes a new runway and expanded passenger capacity.
