Amakusa Airport guide

Amakusa Airport sits near the summit of Mt. Takao on Amakusa-Shimoshima, in the Amakusa Islands of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a small prefectural airfield, officially named Amakusa Airfield. The city of Amakusa lies a few kilometres to the southeast.

The airport opened to public use on 23 March 2000. A single asphalt runway, designated 13/31, measures 1,000 metres by 30 metres. It has no parallel taxiway and no ILS, and aircraft land using a VOR/DME approach. Kumamoto Prefecture owns and manages the field.

Amakusa Airlines is the only carrier. It is based here and flies a single ATR aircraft on scheduled services to Fukuoka and Kumamoto, with Osaka Itami also served. Japan Airlines and ANA codeshare on these routes.

The terminal is one building. The ground floor holds the check-in and arrival areas, a shop, tourist information and the airline's headquarters. The second floor has an observation deck. Sankō Bus runs services between the airport and the Hondo Bus Center.
