Osaka Itami Airport sits across the boundary of Itami, Toyonaka and Ikeda, on the plain north of central Osaka. The site opened as a military airfield in 1939 and began scheduled civil service in 1951, when Japan Airlines flew a leased Martin 2-0-2 between Itami and Tokyo Haneda. Kansai Airports has run the airport since 2016 under a concession from its owner, New Kansai International Airport Company.

For decades the airport kept the English name "Osaka International Airport" even though it stopped handling international flights once Kansai International Airport opened offshore in 1994. To end the confusion, the operator renamed it "Osaka Itami Airport" in English in January 2025; the Japanese name is unchanged. Daily operating hours and flight slots are capped, a restriction tied to the airport's position inside a dense residential area.

A monorail line and limousine buses link the terminal to central Osaka, and travelers approaching from the Itami side reach the building through a tunnel that runs beneath the runway and apron.
