Tokyo Haneda International Airport guide

Haneda Airport sits in Tokyo's Ota ward, about 15 km south of Tokyo Station on reclaimed land at the mouth of Tokyo Bay. It opened as a small airfield in August 1931 and grew through successive land reclamations into Japan's largest airport. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism owns the site, while Japan Airport Terminal Co. and Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation run the passenger buildings.

Haneda handled close to 86 million passengers and 426,500 aircraft movements in 2024, making it Japan's busiest airport and one of the busiest in the world. Four runways, arranged as two crossing pairs, allow near-continuous operations. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways use Haneda as their principal hub, and the international terminal runs around the clock to accommodate late-night and early-morning arrivals.

Skytrax has rated Haneda a five-star airport for several years running, citing its cleanliness and punctuality. Terminal 1, nicknamed "Big Bird," includes a rooftop observation deck and a six-story shopping and dining area, while Terminal 2 houses the on-site Haneda Excel Hotel. A monorail and the Keikyu rail line connect the terminals directly to central Tokyo, cutting travel time to under 30 minutes.
