Cagliari Elmas Airport opened on 3 May 1937 in the town of Elmas, northwest of Cagliari on Sardinia's southern coast. So.G.Aer. S.p.A. operates the airport, which serves as the main air gateway to the island. A 2003 upgrade added jet bridges and expanded the terminal to handle up to 4 million passengers a year.

The airport ranks 12th among Italian airports by traffic. Passenger numbers, aircraft movements and cargo volumes have all grown year over year, reflecting steady demand for routes connecting Sardinia to mainland Italy and the rest of Europe. Ryanair and AeroItalia both base aircraft at the airport, supporting a dense network of scheduled routes.

An onsite railway station, Elmas Aeroporto, sits directly at the terminal and connects to Cagliari Central Station in five to seven minutes, with onward links across the Sardinian rail network. Combined with ARST shuttle buses running every 30 minutes, this gives arriving passengers fast, low-cost access to the city without needing a rental car or taxi.
