Cagliari Elmas Airport opened on 3 May 1937 in the town of Elmas, northwest of Cagliari on Sardinia's southern coast. So.G.Aer. S.p.A. operates the airport, which serves as the main air gateway to the island. A 2003 upgrade added jet bridges and expanded the terminal to handle up to 4 million passengers a year.
The airport ranks 12th among Italian airports by traffic. Combined with ARST shuttle buses running every 30 minutes, this gives arriving passengers fast, low-cost access to the city without needing a rental car or taxi.
