Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport opened on 15 January 1961, replacing Ciampino as Italy's principal gateway for international traffic. The Italian state owns the airport; Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) operates it under a long-term concession. Fiumicino sits on the Tyrrhenian coast at the mouth of the Tiber River, in the coastal town that gives the airport half of its name.
ITA Airways runs its main hub from Fiumicino, connecting Rome to destinations across Europe, North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Several low-cost and charter carriers also base aircraft here, adding dense short-haul coverage across the Schengen area alongside the long-haul network.
