Florence Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, opened on 4 June 1931 and is the second-busiest airport in Tuscany after Pisa. Toscana Aeroporti operates the airport under a concession from Italy's civil aviation authority. Its single runway measures 1,560 metres, a length that restricts operations to narrow-body aircraft and rules out long-haul widebody service. The airport recorded 3.5 million passengers in 2024, a 14% rise on the previous year and a new annual record.

Vueling operates the highest number of weekly departures from Florence, while Volotea serves the largest number of individual routes. Air Dolomiti, ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group carriers add connections to European hubs including Frankfurt, Vienna and Zürich. Toscana Aeroporti has proposed extending the runway to 2,400 metres and building a new terminal to handle larger aircraft and higher passenger volumes, though the project remains subject to environmental review.

The T2 tram line links the terminal directly to Piazza San Marco in central Florence in about 35 minutes, and taxis and airport buses run the same route. The airport sits on the plain between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino, making it the closest airport to the historic city centre of any in Tuscany.
