Egilsstaðir Airport guide

Egilsstaðir Airport is the main air link for East Iceland. It sits on flat ground beside the Lagarfljót river, just north of the town it serves, and the short road transfer is a matter of minutes. Isavia classes it as an international airport, but no scheduled international flights operate from it. A planned Condor service to Frankfurt was cancelled before it began.

The airport has one asphalt runway, designated 03/21 and 2,150 m long. A gravel strip opened here in 1951, and the current paved runway entered service on 23 September 1993. The terminal building dates from 1968. It was rebuilt and enlarged between 1987 and 1999, and a new arrivals hall opened in 2007.

Icelandair is the only scheduled carrier, with flights to Reykjavík. The airport handled 83,954 passengers in 2019. It is run by Innanlandsflugvellir ehf., the Isavia subsidiary that manages Iceland's domestic airports. Travellers use it to reach the fjords and mountain roads of the Eastfjords region, and as an alternative to the long drive from the capital.
