Keflavík International Airport is Iceland's main international gateway, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula roughly 50 km southwest of Reykjavík. Originally built by the United States military in 1943 as Meeks Field, the airport transitioned to civilian use after World War II and has served commercial passengers since the 1940s. It is the only international commercial airport in Iceland and handles all scheduled international traffic for the country.
The airport is operated by Isavia ohf., a government-owned enterprise that also provides air navigation services across Iceland. In 2025, KEF handled 8.1 million passengers across services from 28 airlines to 100 destinations. The airport serves as the main hub for Icelandair and sees significant connecting traffic, with 27% of passengers transiting through rather than entering Iceland.
The terminal has a single passenger building organised into three gate sections: A and C gates on the upper level for Schengen flights, and D gates on the lower level for non-Schengen destinations including the US, UK, Ireland, and Canada. A major East Wing expansion completed in early 2025 added four jet-bridge gates, two bus gates, and expanded retail and dining space — the largest single expansion in the airport's history.
