Dublin Airport opened on 19 January 1940 as Collinstown Airport, operating its inaugural Aer Lingus service to Liverpool. Located 17.5 km north of Dublin city centre in Collinstown, County Fingal, it is Ireland's busiest airport and handles the bulk of the country's international traffic. Three active runways support operations across two passenger terminals, with the newer Terminal 2 opening in 2010 to expand capacity.
The airport serves as the primary hub for Aer Lingus and handles a large volume of transatlantic traffic, benefiting from US Customs and Border Protection preclearance — one of only a handful of airports outside North America to offer this facility. Ryanair, headquartered nearby, operates extensive European services from Terminal 1. Long-haul routes connect Dublin to North America, the Middle East, and Asia.
In 2024, 33.3 million passengers moved through the terminals, a 4% increase on 2023 and close to the airport's planning cap. DAA plc, the state-owned operator, is investing in expanded facilities to meet continued demand growth.
