Mundo Maya International Airport guide

Mundo Maya International Airport sits on the eastern edge of Santa Elena, in the municipality of Flores in the Petén department of northern Guatemala. It is the gateway to the Maya ruins of Tikal and Yaxhá, and about 65 km separates Flores from Tikal. Visitors from Guatemala City reach it in roughly 30 minutes by air.

The airport is run by the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC). International operations began in 1984, when it carried the name Anacleto Mazá Castellanos and later became Mundo Maya. A single concrete runway, 3,000 m long, has an ILS approach for runway 11 and a VOR/DME. The passenger terminal covers about 4,500 m2 and handles up to 500 passengers at peak times, with customs, baggage handling, waiting areas and shops. A separate eastern terminal serves the military. Parking holds about 250 vehicles.

Traffic has grown quickly since the pandemic. Passenger numbers rose from 43,502 in 2020 to 186,324 in 2022 and 284,365 in 2023, then to 365,422 in 2024. Avianca Guatemala and TAG Airlines connect Flores with Guatemala City, and TAG has also flown seasonal services to Cancún and Mérida.
