Asmara International Airport guide

Asmara International Airport (ICAO: HHAS) is the main airport of Eritrea and the country's only one with regular scheduled passenger service. It sits on the highland plateau at an elevation of about 2,335 metres, close to the southern edge of the capital.

Italian colonial authorities built the field in 1922 as Aeroporto di Gura, the first airport in Italian Eritrea. It became the territory's main military airfield and began civilian and commercial flights in the mid-1930s, including a 1935 Imperial Airways link to Khartoum. Ethiopia bombed it in 1998 and 2000 during the Eritrean-Ethiopian War.

The single asphalt runway, 07/25, is 3,000 metres long. The terminal is small, which limits capacity. Scheduled traffic is thin and depends on foreign carriers, since the national carrier, Eritrean Airlines, no longer operates scheduled services. Flights to Addis Ababa resumed in 2018 but Eritrea ordered Ethiopian Airlines to suspend them in 2024. As of April 2026 the airport has six destinations, with Etihad Airways due to add Abu Dhabi from November 2026.
