Kärdla Airport guide

Kärdla Airport serves Hiiumaa, Estonia's second-largest island, and sits on the island's northeastern coast near Hiiesaare. The airport has an ICAO code of EEKA and an elevation of about 5 metres.

It has one asphalt runway, designated 14/32. The strip is 1,520 metres long and 30 metres wide, and it was upgraded in 1998. Flights here have operated since 1963. Passenger numbers fell sharply after Estonian independence in 1991, then recovered as the Tallinn route became a lifeline for the island. A record 16,200 passengers used the airport in 2023, up from about 12,000 in 2022.

Scheduled service connects Kärdla with Tallinn in about 30 minutes, once or twice a day. NyxAir operates the route, and tickets are sold through the airline. Check-in closes 20 minutes before departure, and late arrivals are not allowed on the flight. Earlier decades saw regular links to Haapsalu, Vormsi, Kuressaare, Pärnu, Riga and Tartu, plus charters to Murmansk, Vilnius and Kaunas.

The airport is reached by car, bike, bus or taxi. It hosts an annual Flight Days event on the first weekend of August. Hiiumaa has no rail link, so the air route is the fastest way to the Estonian mainland.
