It stands in a mountain valley at Catamayo, about 18 km west of Loja in a straight line and around 30 km by road, at an elevation of 1,236 metres. Terrain rises to the south and mountains surround the field on its other sides. It was known as Camilo Ponce Enriquez Airport until 13 May 2013.
