Frankfurt Airport sits 12 km southwest of Frankfurt city centre and is Germany's busiest airport and one of the largest in Europe. The airport handled 61.6 million passengers in 2024, making it the 22nd busiest in the world that year. Four runways support around 430,000 aircraft movements annually.

Operated by Fraport AG, the airport opened in July 1936 and has grown into a major intercontinental hub, serving over 300 destinations across five continents. Lufthansa uses Frankfurt as its primary base, operating its own dedicated First Class Terminal on the grounds. A third passenger terminal began operations in April 2026, adding capacity for up to 19 million additional passengers per year.

The airport has direct rail links via the regional S-Bahn and long-distance ICE trains, connecting it to Frankfurt city centre in around 10 minutes and to cities across Germany and Europe. It is a significant cargo hub, with Lufthansa Cargo and AeroLogic among the main freight operators.
