Munich Airport opened on 17 May 1992, replacing the older Munich-Riem Airport. It sits 30 km northeast of Munich's city centre in the Erding and Freising districts of Bavaria, making it accessible from the city in around 40 minutes by car or 45 minutes via the S-Bahn. It is Germany's second-busiest airport after Frankfurt.

The airport is operated by Flughafen München GmbH and has two parallel runways, each 4,000 m long. Terminal 2, which opened in June 2003 and was expanded with a satellite building in 2016, is dedicated to Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. Terminal 1 serves all other carriers across five modules (A–E), including major international airlines.

In 2024 the airport handled 41.6 million passengers across 327,200 aircraft movements, making it the fastest-growing major airport in Germany that year. Its route network covers 224 destinations in 66 countries, served by 96 airlines.
