Ezhou Huahu International Airport opened on 17 July 2022 as Asia's first airport built specifically for cargo. Hubei province and courier company SF Express jointly developed the site, choosing a location in Ezhou that sits roughly equidistant from Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. SF Airlines, the express carrier's freight division, runs the airport as its main hub, flying scheduled cargo services to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America. The airport handled 865,186.8 metric tons of cargo in 2024.

Passenger flights operate alongside the freight business but remain a smaller part of the airport's traffic. Scheduled domestic routes connect the airport to cities including Xiamen, Xi'an, Chengdu and Shenzhen. In 2024 the airport recorded 438,562 passengers and 39,168 aircraft movements.

The airport lies in Ezhou's Yanji area, at the geographic centre of the Wuhan metropolitan region. The Wuhan–Yangxin Motorway, opened in November 2023, cut the drive from Wuhan's Optics Valley district to around 20 minutes. The airport was renamed to add "International" to its title on 15 May 2024, reflecting its expanding overseas freight network.
