Sandy Lake Airport guide

Sandy Lake Airport (ICAO CZSJ) serves Sandy Lake First Nation, an Oji-Cree community in the Kenora District of northwestern Ontario. The airfield sits beside the community at an elevation of 951 ft (290 m).

The airport has a single gravel runway, 11/29, 1,069 m (3,507 ft) long. It is operated by the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Transportation. No passenger or movement statistics are published for the airfield.

Sandy Lake is a fly-in community. A winter ice road links it toward Deer Lake and Pikangikum and on to Red Lake, 227 km to the southwest, but it is open only about six weeks a year, so the airstrip carries most passengers and freight. Scheduled flights are listed for Bearskin Airlines and Wasaya Airways to Sioux Lookout, with Wasaya also serving Thunder Bay. Perimeter Aviation and Northway Aviation list flights to Winnipeg and to other northern communities. Baggage allowances on small aircraft are often tighter than on mainline routes, and schedules change by season, so confirm flight times and identification requirements with the airline before travelling.
