Pangnirtung Airport Guide
Pangnirtung Airport (ICAO CYXP) serves the hamlet of Pangnirtung on Cumberland Sound, on the east coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut's Qikiqtaaluk Region. No road links the hamlet to other communities, so the airport carries its passengers, mail and freight all year.
The airfield sits at 79 feet above sea level, beside the hamlet itself. It has one gravel runway, 06/24, measuring 2,920 feet (890 m). The Government of Nunavut operates the airport, and the territory's published design aircraft is the ATR 42-500. A new terminal building opened in April 2006 as part of a multi-million dollar airport rebuild announced in December 2005. The airport is open around the clock for day and night VFR and IFR operations, with staff on site during published hours.
Because the runway runs through the middle of the community, the territorial government has studied a mountaintop site 8 to 10 km from the hamlet for a replacement airport.
Canadian North provides scheduled service to Iqaluit and Qikiqtarjuaq. The airport recorded 2,049 aircraft movements in 2010.
