Smithers Airport guide

Smithers Regional Airport (IATA: YYD, ICAO: CYYD) serves the Bulkley Valley in northwestern British Columbia. It sits about 3.7 km north of the town of Smithers, at an elevation of 1,717 ft (523 m). The Town of Smithers owns it, having taken over from the federal Department of Transport in 1999.

The field dates to the early 1930s. The Department of National Defence rebuilt it at its present site in 1942. Its single asphalt runway, 15/33, is 7,547 ft (2,300 m) long, long enough for regional turboprops and larger aircraft. The terminal opened in 1970. Phase one of a four-phase expansion finished in 2018 and added a 150-passenger lounge. Nav Canada runs a flight service station on the field. Wikipedia lists 9,494 aircraft movements for 2010.

Scheduled service connects the valley to Vancouver. Air Canada Express and Central Mountain Air have both flown the route. Testimony to a parliamentary committee put traffic at 68,000 passengers in 2019 and 37,000 in 2021, the drop tied to the pandemic.
