Varna Airport Guide
Varna Airport sits 8 km southwest of Varna city centre on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, near the town of Aksakovo. It is Bulgaria's third-largest airport and serves the coastal resort region that draws the bulk of its traffic from late May through early October. In 2023, the airport handled 1.84 million passengers across 13,850 aircraft movements, with Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland among the top source markets.
The airport operates under a 35-year concession awarded in 2006 to Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, a joint venture of Fraport AG (60%) and BM Star (40%). Terminal 2, opened in August 2013, is the current passenger facility — a 20,000 m² building with 25 check-in desks and an annual design capacity of 1.8 million passengers. The original Terminal 1, built in 1972, is now used only for VIP operations.
Over 40 airlines serve the airport seasonally, including Wizz Air, Ryanair, Bulgaria Air, Austrian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Air Serbia. The single runway (09/27) measures 2,517 metres and is equipped with an ILS Category I instrument landing system. Destination coverage reaches more than 60 cities across 25 countries during peak summer season.
