Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Guide
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is Bangladesh's busiest airport, located in Kurmitola in northern Dhaka. It opened in 1980, replacing Tejgaon Airport as the country's main gateway, and was later renamed to honor the Sufi saint Shah Jalal. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh operates the facility, which covers 802 hectares roughly 17 kilometres from the city centre.
A single runway handles both international and domestic traffic. Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the national flag carrier and largest operator, alongside long-haul services from Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines. US-Bangla Airlines and NovoAir carry the bulk of domestic connections to cities such as Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet. The airport also functions as BAF Base Bir Uttom A. K. Khandker, hosting Bangladesh Air Force units alongside civilian operations.
Passenger numbers have grown well beyond the airport's original design capacity of 8 million a year, prompting construction of a new terminal to expand capacity. Migrant workers travelling to and from the Middle East and Southeast Asia make up a significant share of international traffic through the airport.
