Saibai Island Airport guide

Saibai Island Airport (IATA SBR, ICAO YSII) serves Saibai Island in the northern Torres Strait, Queensland. The island is flat, low-lying and mostly mangrove swamp, and lies about 4 km south of the Papua New Guinea mainland. The airstrip serves the Saibai community, home to roughly 340 residents at the 2021 census.

The airport has one paved runway, 12/30, and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council owns it. Airport directories list a common traffic advisory frequency of 124.8 MHz and no customs or immigration facilities. The bitumen strip gives the island year-round access, including the wet season, when king tides flood parts of Saibai.

Hinterland Aviation flies scheduled services between Saibai and other Torres Strait islands, including Boigu Island and Horn Island, and charter operators also use the strip. Skytrans stopped flying in the Torres Strait on 9 May 2025, so travellers should check current timetables with Hinterland Aviation. The island is small and remote, so arrange onward transport in advance and plan around Torres Strait quarantine and travel rules before visiting.
