Yorke Island Airport guide

Yorke Island Airport (ICAO YYKI) serves Masig, a coral cay in the central Torres Strait about 160 km northeast of Thursday Island. The island is 2.7 km long and 800 m across at its widest point, and the airstrip runs along most of its length.

The strip began as a fair-weather airstrip in 1971, with construction starting that August, and was officially opened on 1 May 1972. A permanent concrete runway built in 1998 allows year-round operations. The runway, designated 12/30, is 1,000 m long, which suits light aircraft and turboprops.

The airport is the island's main link to the outside world. It carries residents, mail, medical supplies and freight, and the community of about 250 people has no road connection to any other settlement. Scheduled services connect with Horn Island, the regional hub, in roughly 40 minutes. Charter aircraft and private boats provide other access. Visitors should confirm flight times with the operator, as small-aircraft schedules in the Torres Strait change often.
