Longreach Airport Guide
Longreach Airport (ICAO YLRE) is the main airport for central western Queensland. It sits about 2.8 km northeast of Longreach town, 1,176 km northwest of Brisbane, and mainly serves Longreach, Winton and Barcaldine. The region covers roughly 40,600 square kilometres and is home to about 4,300 people.
The airport has a long place in Australian aviation. Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness surveyed an air route through the town in 1919, and in 1920 the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service, later Qantas, made Longreach its first operational base. One of the original hangars still stands on the airport site, alongside the Qantas Founders Museum and its Boeing 747-200 and Boeing 707. The Royal Flying Doctor Service also bases an aircraft here.
Runway 04/22 is sealed asphalt and 1,936 m long. A single terminal opened in 2012 to meet new security rules, with screening and check-in facilities. In 2016 the operator fitted 396 solar panels to its roof. QantasLink flies to Brisbane, and Rex Airlines links Longreach with Townsville and Winton.
