Karumba Airport Guide
Karumba Airport (ICAO YKMB) serves the Gulf of Carpentaria fishing and tourism town of Karumba, at the mouth of the Norman River in Queensland's Gulf Country. The airfield lies about 4 km north of the town, on Fielding Street. Carpentaria Shire Council operates it as a certified aerodrome.
The airport has one sealed runway, 03/21, about 1,378 m long. A federal-funded upgrade strengthened and sealed the former 1,271 m gravel strip and added lighting, so the field takes charter aircraft for mining and tourism as well as emergency flights. The Royal Flying Doctor Service and other emergency services use it, and it keeps essential supplies moving when roads are cut.
Karumba has no regular scheduled passenger service. The nearest regular flights leave from Normanton Airport, about 71 km away by road. Regional Express has flown into Karumba on a trial basis, and has used the airport when flooding closes the road to Normanton. Wet-season flooding often cuts the roads, which makes the airfield a key link for the town of around 490 residents.
