Lockhart River Airport Guide
Lockhart River Airport serves the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula, about 800 km north of Cairns. It is also known as Iron Range Airport, and its ICAO code is YLHR. The airfield sits at an elevation of 23 m and lies west of the township on Airport Road.
American forces built the aerodrome during World War II. It served as a bomber and communications base with several airstrips, hosting B-26 Marauder and B-17 Flying Fortress squadrons in 1942 and 1943. The current airfield uses one of the original runways, and wartime bunkers and campsites can still be seen nearby.
The airport has a single sealed runway, 12/30, 1,500 m long and lit for 24-hour use. Lockhart River Aerodrome Company Pty Ltd, owned by the Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council, operates it. The company also sells aviation and diesel fuel. Skytrans connects the airport with Cairns, Aurukun and Weipa. Skytrans check-in at the terminal opens 90 minutes before departure and closes 45 minutes before. Baggage is collected outside the terminal.
The road to the community is cut off in the wet season, so the airport carries most medical and other supplies during the summer months.
