Alice Springs Airport sits about 13 km south of the town centre in the Northern Territory, on Santa Teresa Road. It is the main gateway to Central Australia.

The site began as Seven Mile Aerodrome, built by the Department of Defence in 1940, and took its present name in 1958. A terminal of about 10,000 square metres handles all passenger flights. It serves Airnorth, Alliance Airlines, Qantas, QantasLink and Virgin Australia, with routes to Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

The airport runs 24 hours a day with no curfew. Its main runway, 12/30, is 2,438 m long and can take widebody aircraft such as the A380 and Boeing 747. Dry desert air has made the airport a long-term aircraft storage site, and it is also used to launch stratospheric research balloons, during which the runways close to other traffic.
