Zvartnots International Airport Guide
Zvartnots International Airport serves Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, from a site 15 kilometres to the west of the city centre. It opened in 1961 and takes its name from the nearby Zvartnots Cathedral ruins. Armenia International Airports CJSC, a subsidiary of the Argentine conglomerate Corporación América, holds the concession to operate the airport.
The original terminal, a circular Soviet-era building completed in 1971, closed for good in 2011 when a new departures and arrivals complex opened alongside a 600-space car park. The runway carries a Category II instrument landing system, allowing operations in low cloud and reduced visibility, and is long enough to handle wide-body aircraft up to the Airbus A380.
Traffic has grown steadily since Armenia opened its aviation market to low-cost carriers, with Wizz Air and FlyOne Armenia both basing aircraft at the airport. Zvartnots connects Armenia to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia, and remains the country's principal gateway for international travel.
